Still Cold and Random Thoughts - Beavers!

It was cold again this morning, but not quite as bad as yesterday as the wind wasn't blowing when I went for my walk. I was so excited to see a beaver today!!! Asylum Lake is still mostly frozen, but the beavers have managed to open a small area. Really made my day today! When I got to the beavers' lodge, there was only a pair of Canadian Geese in the small area of open water, but as I arrived a pair of Sandhill Cranes flew in and landed. This caused the geese to swim down closer to the beavers' lodge. A beaver promptly popped up as though to warn them they were too close! The same one (or another one) popped up a little later close to where the Sandhill Cranes were standing. For a while it was pretty eventful. I love watching nature, animals, birds and their interactions with one another! A little later three more Sandhill Cranes flew in and for a while, as the two that were already there walked across the lake to the newcomers, I was sure they were not going to be happy with one another. It was lovely to watch them all end up walking together! What a way to spend the early morning.

After my walk, I dropped off some items for shipping, picked up a couple of things I needed and then headed home. It was a semi-productive day at the house. I got all the things checked off my list. I was trying to find five items to declutter, and I found it a real struggle. I did manage it, but barely. It really shouldn't be that hard.

I have pulled out a few books to look through and let go.

I found one quite fascinating and might struggle to let it go lol. It is going though; I've already made my mind up.

I really like the pressed flowers cards. They are really beautiful. I think I'd like to give it a go. I don't think I've pressed a flower since I was a child, but I really like the way these were done and presented. It looks like it might be fun. Has anyone pressed flowers properly? How do you do them? I looked on Amazon and there were a couple of cheap-ish presses I'm thinking about buying. Thanks for the input!

  1. It's a good idea to take photographs of interesting ideas for things. For a while I had a folder called Bright Ideas on my laptop but I haven't checked it in a few (10?) years.
In the old days they pressed flowers in heavy books; protecting the pages with blotting paper first. I've done that using kitchen paper for easy flowers like viola or pansy.

    1. I am going to make a folder on my phone I think. It's probably better than keeping the whole book!

  2. I have a flower press, I use kitchen towel cut into squares, which works for me, I have made just one design in a frame, with glass front and back.

  5. I find it so difficult to get rid of books. The one you showed looks so interesting. I haven't pressed flowers for years, though I have one or two inside books.

    1. It's what I struggle with, though I did get rid of a lot of them last year. I took a few photos of the book and let it go. I think I'm going to press some flowers this year!

  6. The nature is slightly different in my part of the world but it has been lovely the past few mornings on letting the dog out into the garden to hear the birdsong and then again at evensong

    1. Where are you? My sister is in Ipswich, England (where I'm originally from) and she has been sending me lots of spring birds and flowers.

  7. I haven't pressed flowers for ages. I did have a press, who knows where it is now. Wooden top and bottom with screw/crank on top. Now,, I'll have to go look for that.

    1. Lol. That's like the one I want. I think I'll keep an eye out and hope they go on sale! I think it would be fun to press some flowers and make them into cards or framed designs.

  8. Sounds like the beavers were telling the birds that it was way too early for uninvited visitors to be calling! LOL.
I'd say you had a very productive day and that book has a lot of great ideas! Craft books are hard to declutter, aren't they? It's been years since I've pressed any flowers and I just pressed them in a book with several other books piled on top for weight. It might be a fun thing to do this spring, when the California poppies bloom. :)

  9. Lol probably. The beavers did not like them close to their home!
I bet with all the beautiful flowers in your garden you could press them and turn them into cards. I think I'm going to give it a try
