Yes, it's Wednesday again and time to join in the madness of travelling around the world and visiting desks. My thoughts are with Julia. Hopefully she'll have a speedy recovery and be back with us soon. Thank you SO much Jan, for hosting while she is recovering. It is much appreciated. I love joining in with this group.
It was a busy weekend here with adventures at an antiques market and trips to three lighthouses (previous posts). I did make a little time for crafting. Here's my desk as it was when I left it.
I'm starting to try to figure out how the explosion box card is made. Has anyone made one? You can see my outer layer and one of my inside layers to the side. I did attempt to cover the middle but ripped it off as it wasn't working out.
This was how it looked when I practised putting together the layers (no glue lol).
And with the 'cake' on top. Not sure if I like it or not. I have two months to figure it out! There is another one I saw that had the third layer on an angle. I liked the idea of that one. I have three grown children so I thought about using one side each for them, maybe have them write something for Mum that would be on the top of the flap and then a picture underneath. The fourth side would be for me and hubby. Just a thought.
Last, but not least, my updated cross stitch picture. I am FINALLY done with all that gray, done with all the stitching and now on to the backstitching. The end is in sight!
I'm not sure how much I'll get done this week. We are off camping at the weekend! I haven't been camping in years (and longer still since I've been camping in a tent!).
wonderful work, Keep us posted on the explosive card - I have never tried one. Donna #6
ReplyDeleteHello Sharon love your exploding box album. Glad to hear that your finally done with great and enjoy camping hope the weather is great. Hugs ~Anne L#4
ReplyDeletelove the box! have fun camping - it's not camping weather here right now! Helen #10
ReplyDeleteI'm posting at different times so it gives deskers on your side of the Atlantic a chance to be further up the list! And it was Wednesday when you linked, so that's just fine, lol!!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds as if you had the sort of weekend that I love, pottering around interesting places. My hubby took me away to the seaside for a couple of days, it was fab weather and the break did me good. Lots of walking and eating fish and chips on the beach...happy days :-D
Hugs, LLJ xxxx
Ooooh the exploding box card is going to look amazing when you've finished. I've seen lots of tutorials for them on You Tube but haven't tried one yet myself. Look forward to seeing the finished item! HAppy WOYWW :o) Annie C #26
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Sharon. Those exploding boxes are great fun. I made one for each grandchild some years back, putting photos and memories in them. I slightly twisted the three layers of the box too, so when they opened up it was possible to see that each layer was decorated. Have fun working it all out to do what you want it to do!!
ReplyDeleteAll the best with the camping!
Take care. God bless.

Dear Sharon
ReplyDeleteWell done on all your desky loveliness, lovely too peek and peer around :D and love purple too great exploding box..
I always think the first of tricky cards etc. should be done in scrap then proper paper ..
I've found that out the hard way with "new-untried-by-me designs..

ReplyDeleteI've never tried the exploding box card. Can't wait to see the end result. Your cross-stitch is fabulous. Have fun camping. Happy Wednesday! LisaDV #38
ReplyDeleteHi Sharon, you are doing a great job with the cross stitch and it looks like the exploding box is coming along beautifully. Enjoy your weekend away.

Hi Sharon, love how the cross stitch is doing. The exploding box idea sounds a good one too. Not been camping for many, many years, and have no intention of ever doing so again, lol. Have a great week, Hugs, Shaz #18 xx
ReplyDeleteLOL I didn't think I would go either but when hubby and I talked about me not working a lot of it was so that we could spend more time together and camping is his thing so I'm going along with him! It *might* not be that bad lol.
DeleteI have made the explosion box years ago but not with a cake topper inside. Mine just had lots of photos. Enjoy your camping trip! I can barely get hubby to take a day off! Thanks for the visit and happy WOYWW!

I love the exploding card. They are so clever but I do not have a great deal of patience with 3D creating so I will just admire those made by others. thank you for your visit and your kind comments. Parchment created with the Groovi system from Clarity is so easy and extremely effecting. Hope you have a really good week. xxx Maggie #2
ReplyDeletelots of fun stuff going anon this desk! thanks for visiting and your kind words.

The exploding box looks very interesting. I have heard of them but I have never made one so I can't help you there. I'm sure it will be fun to do.
ReplyDeleteYou're going camping. Very brave. I like 'glamping'. I don't mind camping but I want my creature comforts and I would only camp in fine weather. Getting wet is not included. Luckily we have a campervan/RV so that is very luxurious compared to a tent.
Have a good week,
Happy WOYWW,
Lisca
Sharon, have fun camping! When our children were younger, we used to camp with my folks! I don't think I would be too crazy about it now at 70! LOL I made a card in a box once! That is it for me. :) Happy WOYWW! #51
ReplyDeleteWonderful projects! Good luck on that camping trip. We didn't get to go this last stretch of time with the grandson but are hoping for some great opportunities when we get to Oregon. He will be leaving tomorrow, and we will follow (we hope) in about four months! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteThe explosion box is quite the project! I hope you will share the completed box with us! Thanks for sharing! -Lindart #55
ReplyDeleteIt will be good to see your picture finished but I will miss the weekly update on how it is progressing. It really is beautiful. Love how you have got the shading particularly in the face.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the explosion box, it is a long time since I made a proper one but at Christmas I made one with a church inside - should be on my blog somewhere.
I used to camp a lot (Girl Guides (Scouts?) and the older ones called Rangers plus family camping so am in some ways a little envious but then I think of these old bones and the crawling about - no, I will stick to hotels now but you enjoy yourself - nothing like the open air.
Hugs, Neet 14 xx
Hi Sharon, I've never made this type of exploding box but there is a tutorial here which might help http://www.acherryontop.com/articles/Exploding-Box-Tutorial-3828
ReplyDeleteHave a great woyww and happy crafty week, Angela x 25
Your explosion box framework looks good, and there's a plethora of possibilities of what you can do with it. I made one for my wife for our 25th wedding anniversary, which you can find here:

I glued envelopes on the sides with accordion booklets enclosed. Then, I designed a two-sided 3-D centerpiece for it. She loved it! I am so mesmerized by your patience while working on that beautiful cross-stitch. Thanks for the visit and blessings!
I made one of those exploding box cards before. It was so easy! Okay, it was a small group and the teacher stood over us the whole time. I've not tried one on my own. They are very cool though. That cross stitching is looking real good! Thanks for the visit earlier. The no internet thing was at work... for a whole hour. We all wandered around lost. We are useless without our technology. ReplyDeleteThanks for the visit Sharon. I love the box card, amazing..I wish I had the patience. I am new to Art Journalling, but I absolutely love it! Cx #7
ReplyDeleteSharon, thanks for the earlier visit, and nope I have never made an explosion box card, but I do like the idea of the having your children have their sides for messages and the 4th for you both :) ~Stacy #50
ReplyDeleteHi Sharon, Looking forward to seeing your box card.
ReplyDeleteYour stitching is lovely.
Hope you have a lovely time camping.
Thanks for stopping by my blog.

Went into Sutton yesterday to get my son some smart clothes for his work experience week in July so didn't get around to replying to any WOYWW posts at all! Loving your box, what a great idea. I got my mini easels from "The Works" 99p each and they come with mini canvases too, not sure how to source them in the USA though. Happy belated WOYWW BJ#32
ReplyDeleteI have never done an exploding box but I've followed Claire over at What Shall I Make Today for years and she's done some really gorgeous ones. Worth a peep.
ReplyDeleteI am in awe at the cross stitch, looks like a painting. So lovely.
Thanks for stopping by mine already :) Yes it is lovely to finally have a warm inside space. It's squeezed into my bedroom but it's mine and I love it :P

Congrats on finishing the grey! I know that took persistence. ;-) The image is just eye-catching! I haven't done an explosion box 'card' yet, but I made explosion gift boxes years ago. I may still have my sewing box. Hmmm. Will have to look amongst this chaos. Creative Blessings! Kelly #46
ReplyDeleteHi sharon, that exploding box looks as if it is going to be great, if you are uncertain about it, there are some good ones on Pinterest. I've never made one, so it will be great to see your finished one.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my desk, we hope we will have a good time away.

I LOVE the box, no I never tried it but you inspire me to maybe try to create one too... if only I had the time! Thanks for stopping by my blog earlier and happy (belated) woyww. Hug from Holland, Marit #45
ReplyDeleteThe exploding box sounds very tricky!! Hope your postie arrives with our ATCs soon! x Jo
ReplyDeleteI have seen explosion boxes, but haven't tried making one yet. I will let you lead the way. I like how your needlepoint is going. Thanks for stopping by earlier.
ReplyDeleteApril #39
The cross stitch is looking fabulous, and I love the idea of the exploding box, but it sounds rather complicated to make - good luck designing it, I'm sure it will be spectacular. Sorry I'm so late, we have electricians and builders in and the power is off more than it's on, so life it topsy turvy at the moment!
ReplyDeleteDiana #29
Thank you for your birthday wishes at that you stopped by my place earlier ♥ Love that creative chaos on your desk and that explosion box. Wonderful! So many talented artists here! Hope you had a nice weekend and lots of fun camping.
ReplyDeleteTake care
Michelle ♥
Seems like you are a very patient crafter, based on the projects on your desk today. I couldn't resist looking up your previous posts. I LOVE antique fairs! Wow, I dream of owning one of those library card cabinets! And those lighthouses are gorgeous! They make such lovely pictures! Thanks for sharing!
