Decluttering?

Sigh. How do you declutter? Is it easy for you to decide what to keep or get rid of? I'm terrible at it. Clothes and household stuff, not so bad, but books and crafts I find it difficult to get rid of. I can't decide which books to keep or donate. It feels like giving away friends. I read some of my books several times. What happens if I donate it and want to read it again? Regarding crafty stuff - what happens if I give x away and then need one? Grrrr....

Maybe I should just start on the easy stuff :(

  1. I find it very hard to declutter. I did a marathon decluttering session, last year, and it was so hard to do! Definitely start on the easy stuff. Good luck!

  2. I am a gatherer, but also a chucker. So I know both sides. What I can say is the more that you do the easier it gets because you get into a groove and get the idea of what you are keeping and what you are letting go of. Enjoy the process and the results! p.s. glad that all went well with your daughters move.

    1. Thanks Amy! I think it's a matter of getting started too. I think that's the hardest thing. I don't know where to start!

  3. Definitely start with the easy stuff, then the more you get rid of, the more you enjoy the free space and want to lose more.
In the last couple of months we've given away about 50% if our possessions, including most of my books and clothes. What I've found really helpful is with every item to ask myself 'if I saw this full price in a shop now, would I buy it?' Also if there are items you're not sure of, is it easily replaceable? If so, take the risk. Chances are you won't miss it anyway, or you wouldn't have considered getting rid of it.

    1. Wow. That's great and brave of you! We really do need to downsize just because a lot of it is getting to me. I'm not a hoarder by any means but things seem to be growing and I'm feeling the urge to rid myself of things. Some good advice - thanks

  4. I feel comfortable in my old clothes and rarely buy anything, but I've just gone through my wardrobe and will donate some of the better items to charity. It's a start! Likewise I've been sorting out my books which is a harder task because I'm reluctant to give them away. However, I realise that it's unlikely I'll ever have time to read them (if they are novels) and if they are older publications I can reserve them at the library.

  5. Recommend you read Marie Kondo's first book The Life-Changing Magic Of Tidying Up. I keep rereading it to inspire myself to get to the point of just enough instead of too much. Honest, her book is life changing just as the title says. I'm on a year long quest to rid myself of 50% of the stuff I started with 6 months ago. We have even went from two cars to one. We're retired and can do that. I realize not everyone can, but I bring it up to show how much effect her book had on me. It's only $10, but the best money can buy.
